Who could resist a tale of a large dog and an adorable orphan boy? Throw in stunning scenery, nasty Nazis and a heroic doctor and you have the perfect fairy tale movie. Full of suspense, redemption and kindness. It romanticises the privations of wartime rural France but the lovely Belle, a French mountain dog, is of course too busy entertaining lost boys, fighting off wolves and rescuing Jewish families to worry about the conflict.
It’s a heartwarming feel good movie that’s both gentle and engaging. I loved it and wept copiously. Always good to watch a movie at the Embassy in Wellington and the French Film Festival is on there until Monday 7 April 2014.
