The only reason to grow carrots of different colours is ‘because you can’. I pulled white, yellow, red, purple and orange varieties yesterday. I’d sown them at the beginning of March. They look wonderful grated together in a salad or coleslaw. Or roast them with some cauliflower florets.

July is a good time to prune fruit trees. I shredded the prunings, having given Jim-bunny some apple twigs to accompany the carrot tops, to use as litter in the chook house. I confined the chooks for the night. They’d been free ranging for the last few months in the vegetable garden and roosting a pine tree. I was rewarded by an egg this morning, demonstrating that the days really are getting longer.
