In just a month the days will be getting longer again. You know I’m going to start nagging you about planting garlic. I sowed mine at the weekend with four cloves in a 30cm square this year (15cm or 6″ apart in each direction). That’s wider spacing than my usual nine-cloves to a square (10cm or 4″ apart) but hey, I thought I’d get bigger bulbs as a result. I’ve also sown some cloves I dug in about February 2014, as I’d left the garlic I planted this time last year in my garden in Wellington. I sowed 28 cloves in a space 100 by 60cm. I made some winter pesto with the smaller cloves I didn’t plant.
I also planted out some rocket seedlings I’d sown a month ago using the ‘biointensive method‘. Seed flats were a bit shallow so I couldn’t leave the seedlings out of the ground as long as I would have liked. I’m in two minds about whether ‘double digging‘ or ‘lasanga gardening‘ is the way to go for new beds.
