Winter gardening starts in the heat of February. Here are some of the crops that will keep me through the winter (with sowing dates) – broccoli de cicco (1 Feb), spinach baby boom (18 Feb), chicory sugarloaf (21 Feb), pak choi dark dragon (18 March), Chinese cabbage one kilo slowbolt (18 March), turnip snowball (21 Feb). I’ve already harvested radishes, pak choi, daikon and lots of spinach and rocket as these crops all grow quickly. I’m still harvesting side shoots from broccoli de cicco I sowed in August and has been productive all through summer. Carrots and beetroot coming on slowly. Fennel and lettuces doing well too. Welsh, spring and red onions all sown in March still tiny but might be welcome in spring. If the Chinese cabbage (also known as Wong Bok or Napa cabbage) hearts up well I’ll turn it into kimchi.
