Mark Haddon’s best-seller The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time was published in 2003 and tells the story of a 15-year old boy with Asperger’s syndrome. It was marketed as children’s fiction but was equally enjoyed by adults, myself included. I moved on to A Spot of Bother which captures English middle-age neuroses perfectly. Haddon’s most recent (2012) book The Red House details both parental and teenage angst in his distinctive clipped prose. Italics instead of quotation marks must be a modern publishing invention and I got the hang of it eventually.
