Fill twelve plant pots with potting mix and water well. I use 8cm square pots about 10cm deep.
Sow one seed (yes, just one) in each pot about half a centimetre deep. We’re aiming to get 8-10 bean seedlings although we might end up with 12.
Put somewhere that gets full sun in the morning and afternoon shade. If the seedlings get tall and ‘leggy’ they don’t have enough light.
Water gently daily.
Prepare a space in your garden 1 metre square ready to plant out the seedlings when you can see the roots at the bottom of the pots.
If you’ve bought climbing or runner beans buy eight 2.1m bamboo canes so you’re ready to make a circular support for them about 1m diameter. Or you can plant in straight lines.
Collect some seaweed ready to spread between the seedlings when you plant them out to keep slugs and snails away.
