I’ve planted out the last of the purple sprouting broccoli seedlings under mesh stretched over hoops of plastic water pipe. This protects them from doves, pheasants and sparrows who enjoy them for their dinner. Misty is providing an extra guard.
The preparations we make in the winter garden make a big difference in spring and summer. It might be making compost, planting trees or mulching. You could refurbish your herbs and pot some up for indoor use.
Winter soup is warming and particularly nutritious if made with homemade stock. Slow cookers are invaluable for one-pot meals that can cook while you’re doing something else. Meatloaf in the slow cooker is easier than burgers – you can even slice it up and serve it in a bun.
The garlic is up, planted in May. Broad beans are coming along too but you can sow them now and they’ll be up in spring time.
