too much mulch? or not?

Come and hear me answer ‘it depends’ to a few more gardening questions at Saturday’s ‘Edible Gardening for Beginners’ workshop part 2. These cucumbers are settling in before having their bottomless pot protection removed and vertical supports added. The pots stops the birds burying the plants with mulch by scratching for worms. Mulching suppresses weeds, conserves moisture and adds organic matter to the soil, but it can be a problem even with reasonably large plants, let alone small seedlings or seeds. So as with many apparently great gardening ideas, the answer as to whether to mulch is ‘it depends’.
