twelve salad leaves

Salad leaves can be colourful, spiky or bitter. Their taste, texture, shape, size and appearance are all important. There’s much more to salad than lettuce and the best way to experience them all is to grow your own. Combined with some herbs and a great dressing you’d have the basis of a delicious lunch. Here’s a selection of leaves you could grow from seed in your garden.

1 rocket

2 mizuna

3 claytonia (miners’ lettuce)

4 cos ‘little gem’

5 cos ‘silvia’

6 chicory ‘red treviso’

7 spinach

8 arugula (perennial rocket)

9 chicory ‘red dandelion’

10 red mizuna

11 corn salad (lamb’s lettuce)

12 mibuna
