It is the perfect time to plant out all those seedlings you sowed as seeds in February. You sowed them right? Ok, so it’s off to the garden centre this weekend for some broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, and cavalo nero. A few lettuces, spinach and silver beet perhaps. I’ve sown pak choi, carrots, beetroot, turnips, spring onion seeds direct in the soil this week plus rocket and mizuna for winter greens in big pots. A few packets of those would be a great idea plus a punnet of leeks and spring onions.
I love the golden beetroot (touchstone gold from Kings of course) I’ve grown. My red beetroot and shallot fermentation experiment is delicious after just a week. I guess beetroot and onions were just made to be pickled. It’s slightly sweet and syrupy and the last minute addition of some dry old juniper berries gives it a pleasant scented tang. Zucchini and fennel combo works well as did the cucumber mustard classic. Trying a cucumber black pepper mix now.
